Wolverley weekend

An enjoyable couple of days based at the Wolverley camping and caravan club site.

Setting off after lunch we travelled down the M6 and M5 to the Wolverley site situated just north of Kidderminster. Arriving mid afternoon we were greeted by a friendly warden who showed us to our pitch.

The site is located just outside the village, but very close to the Lock Inn. Wolverley is a quirky little village, dominated by the church located on a site recorded in the Doomsday Book. On the road leading from the church the houses are built into the rocks.

Having the pub on the doorstep we popped down for a couple of pints and a bite to eat. Fortunately there is a gate at the bottom of the site which enables easy access to the pub. Reminiscing of his teens Kevin ordered the faggots and mash, washed down with a pint of Banks’s mild.

Sunday morning and the sun was shining. Scrambled eggs for breakfast al fresco then off to explore the local area.

Exiting the gate at the bottom of the campsite provides easy access to the canal towpath. I headed along the towpath to the lock at Cookley, just before the Cookley tunnel.

Planned route

Leaving the canal I followed the footpath across the field and up the side of a factory and over the river Stour. The path went past some stables and onto a small road. The sign pointed to leave the road on the left and start the climb towards Blakeshall, initially up some steps then crossing fields of wheat. Crossing the road into Blakeshall an entrance to the woods at Kingsford forest park appears to the left.

The paths through the woods were quite confusing due to a lack of signposts.

I headed to the picnic site then followed the signs to Kinver farm shop. Just past the shop I took the path on the left onto Kinver Edge. The fairly steep path lead to the site of an ancient hill fort. The views from the summit were spectacular.

The path along Kinver Edge was well signposted and very popular.

The path split and I descended back through the forest to the entrance at Blakeshall and then retraced my route back to the canal and the campsite.

A lovely circular walk from the campsite. Back in Dora for tea, lemony chicken and basmati rice. The following morning we packed up Dora and set off home. A wonderful weekend away
